The Eucharist

The Greeting

The president greets the people

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you.

Lord, speak to us that we may hear your word.
Move among us that we may behold your glory.
Receive our prayers that we may learn to trust you. Amen.

Confession

Lord we have forgotten to love the genuine and have turned to the evil hidden in our lives
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Father we have acted as if we are without hope, and forgotten to act and live with mercy:
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

Holy Spirit, we are called to pray and know that you will help us, but we have let our prayers become stale and lifeless.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

May the God of love bring us back to himself, forgive us our sins,
and assure us of his eternal love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray and to give more than either we desire or deserve: pour down upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Psalm 105.1-6,23-26,45b   we stand and say the underlined verses together

1 O give thanks to the Lord and call upon his name; ♦
make known his deeds among the peoples.

2 Sing to him, sing praises,
and tell of all his marvellous works.

3 Rejoice in the praise of his holy name; ♦
let the hearts of them rejoice who seek the Lord.

4 Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his face continually.

5 Remember the marvels he has done, ♦
his wonders and the judgements of his mouth,

6 O seed of Abraham his servant,
O children of Jacob his chosen.

23 Then Israel came into Egypt; ♦
Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

24 And the Lord made his people exceedingly fruitful;
he made them too many for their adversaries,

25 Whose heart he turned, so that they hated his people ♦
and dealt craftily with his servants.

26 Then sent he Moses his servant
and Aaron whom he had chosen.

45 That they might keep his statutes ♦
and faithfully observe his laws. Alleluia.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end Amen.

Gospel Reading

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Romans 12.9-21.

Glory to you O Lord.

9Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour. 11Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. 13Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. 17Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. 18If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ 20No, ‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.’ 21Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

At the end the reader may say

This is the Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to you, O Christ.

Reflection

When we stand up to say the creed, we are saying what we believe God is, and God has done and what shapes our belief. We have been doing this for hundreds of years, reciting who God is, but I do sometimes wonder if perhaps we ought to have a “so what” statement too.

You know what I mean: I love the companionship and fun of having a dog SO I have a Labrador and Newfoundland as part of our family.

I really dislike the taste and smell of fish SO I rarely eat or cook with seafood!

I am a Christian SO … what does it really mean to be a follower of Christ today?

What is the so what of being a Christian if it is not this stunning, challenging, and wonderful passage from St Paul? Can you image saying this together in church?

I am a follower of Christ, and I am a believer, therefore I strive to act in such a way as to make my faith known in my living not my words alone. So this is how I choose to live:

I will

9Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good;

We will

10love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honour.

We shall not 11 lag in zeal,

But we shall

be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord.

12Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer.

13Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Though it may be hard and costly we will

14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.

15Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

16Live in harmony with one another;

I will do my best to

not be haughty, but associate with the lowly;

do not claim to be wiser than I am/you are.

17not repay anyone evil for evil, live peaceably with all.

We shall remember

19Beloved, never avenge yourselves,

20No, ‘if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink;

I know the way to live in peace and love means that I cannot

21 be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.A

And in living this way I will become a walking living breathing sacrament of the Love of God in the present time. Give me grace to be able to live this way always, and when I fall, guide me Lord back to the right pathway. Amen.

Creed we stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers by John Iles (we sit or kneel to pray)

Heavenly Father, help us to follow the path that you have set before us; support us when we stumble; hold us fast when the going becomes rough; sustain us when darkness obscures the way; strengthen us when we become faint hearted and keep within us the vision of the goal towards which we journey.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Lord, help us to live out our lives in accordance with the commitments which, each week, we make to you in the words of the creed; give us the strength to act so that our faith is known by our deeds not just our words; may we love one another unreservedly; may we rejoice in the hope that you have given us and be a living disciple of your promise to humankind.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Speak to us, Lord, that we may hear your word; guide your church and its people through the Covid 19 pandemic so that it may emerge stronger in faith and more able to deal with the challenges which lie ahead; give wisdom to our Archbishop Justin, our Bishop Philip, Vanda our Rector and all clergy that they may inspired to find new ways to celebrate our faith.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Merciful Father, we pray for all those parts of our world which are engulfed in conflict; instil in the minds of all protagonists the benefits of seeking peaceful means to resolve their differences; make them hear the pleas of the majority to end the suffering of war and embrace a life of co-existence in harmony; bring comfort to those whose lives have been rent apart by conflict and give them hope in the future.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Lord God, we are blessed to live in a beautiful part of your world which, presently, is awash with holiday makers; help us to make them welcome and to do all we can to share with them the wonders of our beaches, cliffs and landscape; grant that they may respect our environment and
return to their homes refreshed and leaving nothing more than their footprints in the sand.
Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

And at the end   Merciful Father, Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

concluding with:

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever Amen.

The Peace

Words of introduction to the peace are used concluding with:

The peace of the Lord be always with you

And also with you.

A prayer is said over the bread and wine

Blessed be God, by whose grace creation is renewed,
by whose love heaven is opened,
by whose mercy we offer our sacrifice of praise.
Blessed be God for ever.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord is here His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is always right to give you thanks, God our Creator, loving and faithful, holy and strong. You made us and the whole universe, and filled your world with life.

You sent your Son to live among us, Jesus our Saviour, Mary’s child. He suffered on the cross; he died to save us from our sins;
he rose in glory from the dead.

You send your Spirit to bring new life to the world and clothe us with power from on high. And so we join the angels to celebrate and say:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Father, on the night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with his friends. He took the bread, and thanked you. He broke it, and gave it to them, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine. He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you. This is my blood, the new promise of God’s unfailing love. Do this to remember me.

Great is the mystery of faith

Jesus Christ has died. Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine, and remember his death and resurrection, send your Holy Spirit, that we who share these gifts may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us that we may love one another, work for the healing of the earth, and share the good news of Jesus, as we wait for his coming in glory. For honour and praise belong to you, Father, with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit: one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world.
God here among us, light in the midst of us,
bring us to light and life.

Giving of Communion

Christ is the true bread which has come down from heaven.
Lord, give us this bread always.

The priest receives the bread and wine on behalf of the community

Thanksgiving we stand

All praise and glory to you Lord and Saviour

For your life has shown us a way to life eternal

For your compassion brought the wounded to life

For your trust which restores the least to your kingdom

For your gentleness gives us hope that we can serve you

All praise to you our servant king. Give us grace to follow where you lead in obedience, faith and love. Amen.

Final Prayer and Blessing

God of power, may the boldness of your Spirit transform us, may the gentleness of your Spirit lead us, may the gifts of your Spirit equip us to serve and worship you now and always. Amen.

Gracious God, whose Son gave us the supreme example of love, may we be genuine in our prayers and praise, with the strength to turn from evil to good, that we may know harmony in our lives, and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always. Amen.

Go in love, in joy and in harmony to share the peace of Christ.

Thanks be to God.

Lord our God,

Amid the uncertainties of our human life,

May we pause and draw strength from you,

Trusting in your faithful love,

We ask through Jesus, your Son our Lord. Amen
